In 1948, two young women created Mancus Club to “help the handicapped help themselves.”

Mancus, derived from Latin meaning disabled, became the first and only non-profit organization dedicated to serving  the  recreational and transportation needs of physically challenged people in Delaware and surrounding areas.

Membership grew, and in 1962 the Club became The Mancus Foundation, complete with a board of directors and officers to guide the growing organization.

A permanent, barrier-free facility was purchased at  29th and Jessup street, Wilmington, in 1964.
